Craig Says He’ll Stay in the Senate
My favorite part of the NYTimes story:
“When my term has expired, I will retire and not seek re-election,” said Mr. Craig, who was accused of soliciting sex from an undercover police officer in the bathroom of the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport in early June. “I hope this provides the certainty Idaho needs and deserves.”
Yep, what Idaho deserves.
James Joyner - after calling him a liar, a pervert and a joke - wonders, “Why would his word provide any certainty? It’s of no value whatsoever.”
Right.
Even better, betting is we can count on bathroom sex and Republicans in the news for a long time to come…
By all accounts, his lawyers will take his case to the Court of Appeals and state Supreme Court. Today’s setback is just the first step in a legal strategy of three-taps-and-you’re-out.
Hennepin County District Judge Charles Porter found that Craig had entered the guilty plea to to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge “accurately, voluntarily and intelligently,” and that it was too late to withdraw his admission.
In a sharply worded 27-page order, the judge found that Craig had freely given his plea after extensive discussions with prosecutors and after waiving his right to an attorney.
“The defendant, a career politician with a college education, is of at least above-average intelligence,” Porter wrote. “He knew what he was saying, reading and signing.”
